Starting signal for redesign of Elisabethenstraße and Paradiesgasse

Starting signal for redesign of Elisabethenstraße and Paradiesgasse

(kus) The redesign of Elisabethenstraße and the adjoining Paradiesgasse in Sachsenhausen began on Monday, August 21. The two city councillors Mike Josef, head of the department for planning and housing, and Klaus Oesterling, head of the department for traffic, initiated the construction work with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The total cost of the construction project, part of the "Schöneres Frankfurt" program, is around 3.5 million euros.

"The street is currently heavily geared towards car traffic. With wider sidewalks, rearranged lanes and parking facilities, the stretch between Walter-Kolb-Straße and Affentorplatz will become much more attractive. In the future, 14 new trees will also contribute to this, making the streetscape greener and improving the urban climate," says Mike Josef.

"Until now, there have been no separate traffic lanes available for bicycle traffic in this road area. Now we are creating space for it in the road space. The bus lane out of town will become a shared lane for bus and bicycle traffic. The bus lane will be removed in favour of a protective lane for cyclists on the way into town," Klaus Oesterling continued.

The redesign serves to upgrade the public space. In addition to the renewal of the roadway and sidewalks, the barrier-free conversion of the crossing areas and bus stops is also planned. In future, people with limited mobility will be able to cross the road more safely and use local public transport more easily. In addition, the traffic lights and street lighting will be modernised and drinking water, gas, electricity and telecommunications lines will be renewed.

The transformation, covering a total area of 7000 square meters, will be implemented in five construction phases and will be completed by early November 2018.

The construction phases are divided as follows:
1st construction phase Elisabethenstraße north side
2. Construction phase Elisabethenstraße south side
3rd construction phase Paradiesgasse/Affentorplatz west side
4. Construction section Paradiesgasse east side
5th construction section Elisabethenstraße/Paradiesgasse: surfacing and marking works

From Monday, August 21, to Tuesday, August 29, preparatory construction works will take place. During this time, Elisabethenstrasse will be open to traffic in both directions. After the Museum Embankment Festival has been dismantled, the northern carriageway of Elisabethenstrasse between Walter-Kolb-Strasse and Paradiesgasse will be closed on one side for three months from Wednesday, August 30. Cars and buses can pass the construction site in the direction of the city. Detours have been set up in the direction of Südbahnhof. Bus traffic will run via Brückenstraße and Schifferstraße.

The City of Frankfurt will provide continuous information about the changes to the traffic routing as the construction work progresses.
