Statement by Mayor Feldmann

A statement on the occasion of the meeting of the city parliament of Thursday, March 26

(ffm) Dear citizens of Frankfurt,

nothing seems normal anymore. Last Friday, the magistrate met in the usually much too large plenary hall, and today, Thursday, the parliament passed a large billion-dollar budget with a minimum of seats.

What is true in parliament is true throughout the city: normality seems to be lost on us. For this very reason, I would like to thank all the people of Frankfurt. Thank you for behaving in such a prudent, solidary and reasonable manner.

Our goal is clear: we will do everything we can to ensure that our hospitals can withstand the challenge. When we see pictures from Milan, from Strasbourg or Madrid, it triggers fear. That is understandable. But against the worries of the many, the efforts of all will help. And: solidarity across borders.

Our thanks go to everyone who is there for us now - every day:

- in caring and healing professions

.- in our supermarkets

- in logistics

.- those who keep security and order

- who take care of our little ones

- all, really all, who take care of the elderly and the sick.

They are our everyday heroes.

At the same time, our Frankfurt city police reports positive results of their checks. Since March 18, they have been carrying out checks around the clock. If there were still quite a few violations at the beginning, this number has gone down very significantly.

Frankfurt has recognized the seriousness of the situation!

Nevertheless, I join the current demand: We need a catalogue of fines to deter the unreasonable few.

You can count on it: Your administration is working. Just as the city's magistrate and parliament work. The city's administrative staff makes important and quick decisions.

In this regard, my special thanks go to our Health Department Director Stefan Majer. With prudence, commitment and common sense, he has already done much to ensure that our Frankfurt comes through this crisis well. Just as the Frankfurt health authorities are doing a great deal at the moment. In the crisis we notice together: the state action is characterized by professionalism.

At the same time, I am aware that this situation presents our economy and many employees with challenges, some of which are existential. Markus Frank, head of the economic department, is working closely with me in the economic crisis team. All forces are bundled there with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the trade unions, the Chamber of Trade, the employers' representatives and the employment agency. Of course, the aim is to ensure that federal and state aid reaches its destination quickly, unbureaucratically and efficiently. Where they are urgently needed!

It will also be about: How can we as a city help our businesses, the cultural workers, the small self-employed, the small tradesman in such a way that bankruptcies do not occur?

Our Frankfurt is strong.

Our Frankfurt is full of commitment, creativity, charity.

Our Frankfurt is defiantly:

Frankfurt!

Yours

Peter Feldmann, Lord Mayor
