Successful open day - Frankfurt police say thank you

Frankfurt (ots) - (em/as) Over 20.000 visitors came and celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Frankfurt Police Headquarters on Saturday.

Punctually at 1:00 p.m. the headquarters opened its doors to everyone and immediately yesterday the first visitors streamed into the courtyards of the Frankfurt Police Headquarters. Police President Gerhard Bereswill personally opened the open day and warmly welcomed the visitors.

The supporting program in the courtyards and around the headquarters was varied and diverse. In the inner courtyard the SEK abseiled down, on the south side of the building the service dogs showed their skills. There were also police horses to marvel at, as well as a wide range of police vehicles, such as a water cannon and various patrol cars.

But there was also a lot of participation: while some sat in a police vehicle, others tested the colorful program of the cooperation partners of the Frankfurt Police on the "Action Mile" and let themselves be turned upside down in the rollover simulator, for example. The "Prevention Mile" was also very well attended. The guided tours of the crime museum and the shooting range were also very popular. The younger guests also got their money's worth. They had their face painted and then raced in the Bobby Car race.

Mayor Peter Feldmann: ‚Our police do a good job!'

(kus) In view of the 150th anniversary of Frankfurt's police headquarters on June 24, the Lord Mayor has praised the work of the police and called for more support from the state of Hesse for its largest and most important city.

The Lord Mayor: "A century and a half ago, Frankfurt's state sovereignty ended. Our city was annexed to the Prussian state. It was given a magistrate's constitution and, for the first time, a modern police force, which was then part of the city administration. People were wise enough at the time to entrust the task of setting up the Frankfurt police force to an affable and diplomatic official who had already served as a civil commissioner since the city's occupation. The first Frankfurt police commissioner and district administrator of the Frankfurt city district, Guido von Madai, won the approval of the citizenry by his cooperative administrative style - despite widespread hostility to Prussia - so that they gave him a friendly send-off when he continued his career as police commissioner in Berlin in 1872."

In Feldmann's estimation, the current police chief, Gerhard Bereswill, is acting in precisely this good tradition: "He is committed, open and close to the people. Gerhard Bereswill is a stroke of luck for our Frankfurt."

During the ceremony, the Lord Mayor took a critical look at current developments: "In Hesse, the state government has made too many savings on our police. But public safety is rightly an expectation of the people of our city. I expect that, for example in the station district, no police officers will be withdrawn, but additional ones will be deployed. All our efforts are doomed to failure if they are not supported by the state of Hesse in terms of security policy. The responsibility for our police lies with the state of Hesse, which we are happy to support. Here I expect clear signals that Frankfurt will not be abandoned! We have joint successes, but that is not enough for us; there must be no areas of fear in any part of our Frankfurt at night either. We need more police, not less."

The Frankfurt Police would like to thank all visitors for the successful celebration of the 150th anniversary.
