Successful speed checks: Frankfurt with lowest infringement rate in 20 years

The increased speed checks by the Frankfurt traffic police are having a lasting effect: last year, the rate of speeding violations was at its lowest level in two decades at 7.5 percent. This is the result of recent surveys by the Road Traffic Office.

A total of 1,848,259 vehicles were recorded in 2023 with five measuring vehicles working in two shifts. This showed a significant decrease in the number of violations. In comparison: in 2005, 17.5 percent of the vehicles measured were still speeding. Wolfgang Siefert, head of the mobility department, sees this as the success of consistent prevention measures: "Our intensive monitoring policy is paying off. Since 2005, we have been able to reduce the infringement rate by a whole ten percentage points. That shows: General prevention works!"

The measures focus in particular on residential areas, school routes and childcare facilities, where 30 km/h zones often apply. Here, an appropriate speed is essential for the safety of the most vulnerable road users. Faster reaction times and shorter braking distances can save lives in an emergency.

The continuous expansion of control measures clearly correlates with the reduction in the rate of speeding, as statistical analyses show. The measures also contribute to the long-term reduction in serious traffic accidents resulting in death or serious injury.

Siefert concluded by thanking the responsible drivers: "The vast majority of road users follow the rules and therefore contribute to safety in our city. However, those who do not abide by the rules must also expect to be checked throughout the city in the future."
