The Climate Piazza comes to the zoo

The Climate Piazza comes to the zoo

In summer 2017, the <link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de ffm-aktuell s ugc der-rossmarkt-wird-zur-klima-piazza.html _blank>Climate Piazza on Roßmarkt made it possible to experience in a sensual way how greenery can be used to create a relaxed and leafy atmosphere on a sealed city square. One highlight of this was the "Green Room", which has now reappeared in Frankfurt - this time at the entrance to Frankfurt Zoo.

This is already a reference to the weekend of August 17-19, when the Environment Department together with Frankfurt Zoo will present the "Climate Piazza at the Zoo", a joint exhibition on the theme of "Humans and Animals in Climate Change". The choice for this venue of this year's Climate Piazza is explained by Frankfurt's Head of the Environment Rosemarie Heilig as follows: "In the past hot summers, we have repeatedly experienced how Frankfurt heats up and are currently experiencing it again. It is not only people who are suffering, but also animals. We will discuss these consequences of climate change at the Climate Piazza."

"How can we design urban spaces so that people and animals enjoy spending time in them? Therein lies our challenge. One answer is already today, lots of green," Heilig adds. After all, trees, shrubs, green facades and roofs bring cooling to the city, dampen traffic noise and promote quality of stay.

Frankfurt's zoo director Miguel Casares adds: "Weather and climate phenomena not only have an impact on us humans, but always on animals and plants as well. The climate adaptation strategies that many animal species have developed over time are diverse and exciting." Much can be learned about these adaptation strategies at the Zoo's Climate Piazza, Cesares said.

As last year, the Zoo's Climate Piazza program includes daily expert talks and discussion panels. In addition, hands-on activities invite visitors to engage with the topics of climate change and climate adaptation. On the "Climate Safari through the Zoo", for example, you can discover animals that are affected by climate change in the wild. During the climate safari, visitors can engage in conversation with the keepers at the respective stations.

Another highlight will be the presentation by neophyte expert Peter Becker, who will show how to deal with the new climatic conditions and their consequences. He will make short work of unwelcome plants that increasingly feel at home with us due to rising temperatures: they will be harvested and made into delicious spreads.

"Climate Piazza at the Zoo" is an interactive exhibition weekend from 17 to 19 August. For more information, visit <link http: www.frankfurt-greencity.de _blank>
