The corridors of the Alte Oper shine in new splendour

With the start of the new season, the Alte Oper Frankfurt is presenting itself with a fresh new look – at least in its corridors. On levels 2 and 3, the corridors have been extensively renovated in collaboration with the architectural firm Jourdan & Müller Steinhauser. New seating, wooden slats and a modified colour and lighting concept create a brighter and more open impression.

Photo impressions from opera life

The most striking new feature is a large-scale photo exhibition that offers insights into the theatre's diverse programme. It shows scenes from classical music and entertainment, festivals, community projects, and the gala and congress sector. Visitors encounter emotions and snapshots that have shaped the theatre's recent history in the corridors. Additional information can be accessed digitally via QR codes. The exhibition was curated by Frankfurt photographer Wonge Bergmann.

Historical find in the foyer

One special exhibit already hints at a larger exhibition on the history of the building, which is scheduled to open on Level 5 in 2026/27: A display case contains a violin that was recovered from the ruins of the destroyed opera house by a firefighter in 1944.

Voices of those responsible

Head of the Department of Culture Ina Hartwig spoke of an "impressive overall picture" that highlights the importance of the Alte Oper for the city. Artistic director Markus Fein emphasised that it is not just about decorative design: the images should "let the building speak" and show the diversity of the programme. In the long term, there are plans for a comprehensive presentation of the building's nearly 150-year history. The modernisation was made possible by the support of several foundations, including the Crespo Foundation, the Cronstett and Hynspergische Protestant Foundation and the Dr Marschner Foundation.
