Last November, the popular Ebbelwei-Express finally awoke from its year-and-a-half-long hibernation - only to be sent back to the depot barely four weeks later. Now, however, the "traveling cider pub" is once again allowed to coach guests through the city. Since March 19, the traditional streetcar has been running on its usual route again. Of course, not everything is back to normal yet. After boarding for the round trip, which is possible at every "Ebbel-Ex stop", the 3G rule and mandatory masks still apply on the train. To consume the eponymous Ebbelweis, the masks may be removed.
However, there are other circumstances besides Corona that stand in the way of completely normal operations, at least temporarily. For example, guests must be prepared for temporary detour due to necessary construction work on tracks and switches. On the weekend of March 26-27, the Ebbel-Ex will run in both directions via Sachsenhausen and not through the old town due to work at Börneplatz. On the April weekends from April 2 to 24 inclusive, the Ebbel-Ex will not run at all due to construction work on various track sections. From Saturday, April 30, the streetcars will run to Westbahnhof station until June, as the usual trade fair loop cannot be used due to construction work. And on May 1, the Ebbel-Ex does not run at all because of the traditional bike race.
Despite these restrictions in the coming weeks, it is nice that the Ebbelwei-Express may be on the road again. After all, the strikingly painted cars have been as much a part of the cityscape as the skyline or the Romans for around 45 years.
