The Hessen-Center gets a makeover
The Hessen-Center gets a makeover

It is one of Frankfurt's oldest and most popular shopping centers outside the Zeil: The Hessen-Center! Even though the average daily footfall of 15,000 visitors is absolutely satisfactory - especially as over 70% of them are regular customers - those responsible for the building management are aware that the shopping centre, which opened in 1971, is not only visually getting on in years. And so ECE has decided on a lavish modernisation at a cost of a whopping 45 million euros, which will be carried out in phases until the end of 2019.

The heart of the conversion will be the new multi-storey car park, which, with three levels in the future, will also provide the new, more attractive facade for the center. In the first construction phase, part of the old multi-storey car park will be demolished from the end of January, and work will then begin on the new car park from the middle of the year. Then, in early 2019, the remaining old structure will disappear and be replaced by the completed parking garage by the end of next year. This phased reconstruction is to ensure that the parking supply for customers is maintained during this construction period. The new car park will offer wide parking spaces, several charging stations for electric vehicles, cashless payment and other attractive services. Nevertheless, the low parking fees are not to change.

But also within the center with its 115 shops, a whole lot will happen in the next two years. The quality of stay in the center is to be increased with a completely new lighting concept, the construction of cozy lounges and offers especially geared to young families, such as a play area for children. A qualitative upgrade of the gastronomic offer is also intended to attract even more customers to the Hessen-Center for an even longer stay. Two new lifts, completely revised signage, new planting and completely refurbished customer toilets are designed to further enhance visitor comfort.

In the 1970s, when the Hessen-Center opened, it was primarily about meeting demand. Admittedly, this is different today. The aim of ECE is therefore to be able to pick up customers more individually with the new offers and new shop concepts, without disregarding what the regular customers have appreciated about the shopping center for so many years. An urban marketplace is to be created here in the east of Frankfurt, which will appeal to young families as well as older customers who have enjoyed coming to the Hessen-Center time and again for years.

These are ambitious plans that make it clear how much confidence is placed in the established location. The fact that not only the façade is being spruced up, but also gaps in the service offer are being closed to make the shopping experience even more pleasant, relaxed and attractive for the customers, could then actually lead to the wish that the frequency will increase to 16,000 visitors per day in the long term actually being fulfilled.

We will of course stay on the ball and keep you informed about the rebuilding.
