Lights on, eyes open: From Sunday, March 18, up to and including Friday, March 23, Frankfurt will once again shine in the splendor of the LUMINALE: <link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de ffm-aktuell s ugc die-luminale-taucht-frankfurt-in-neues-licht.html _blank>We had already reported to you about this year's Biennale of Light Art HERE. Now more details about the program and the highlights were announced at a press conference. In total, more than 140 projects in five festival categories - Art, Community, Study, Solutions and Better CIY - are on the extensive program, which requires from the visitors good shoes, a lot of space on the memory cards of the cameras and also a little patience at the highly frequented locations.
For Lord Mayor and patron Peter Feldmann, one thing is clear: "The Luminale has become a permanent fixture in Frankfurt's cultural calendar. Its optimised concept has given the festival a new quality. Luminale 2018 sustainably links artistic productions, technological development and meaningful social goals. In doing so, it raises the profile of our city as a pioneer of modern urban development."
Feldmann will open the Biennale for Light Art and Urban Design on March 18, probably at 7:30 p.m., when the Römer will begin to glow in a very special way. The light artist Philipp Geist is responsible for this, who has developed a multimedia installation for the town hall and the Römerberg - an expansive work of light art that visitors can walk through. In the process, new perspectives open up to them again and again. The work of art also includes terms that Geist makes visible for a short time on walls of fog - and which the people of Frankfurt were able to submit themselves. Geist will be remembered by many visitors from the Luminale 2012. Back then, he bathed the Bockenheim university campus in colored light with his award-winning installation "Time Drifts."
But the Römer is not the only sight that will shine in a completely new light during the Luminale. The Italian artist collective Karmachina, for example, will illuminate the history of the Alte Oper in a video mapping show, while the Bremen artist collective Urbanscreen, together with illustrator Andreas Preis, will transform the façade of the European Central Bank into an animated street art gallery. And Viennese artist Victoria Coeln creates a polychrome light room in St. Catherine's Church. Frankfurt's Fabian Thiele takes the start of construction of the Eiserner Steg 150 years ago as the occasion for a typo installation with a poem by the dialect poet Friedrich Stoltze.
Feldmann promises: "Great things await us. As a Frankfurter, as a Bonameser, I would like to draw attention to another wonderful project: ‚dark places' perceived as unsafe in the middle of the Ben-Gurion-Ring around the church of St. Lioba will be illuminated by luminous objects and installations during the Luminale. The design is the result of creative processes by light designer Jens Schader and residents living in the Bügel from a wide range of backgrounds and ages."
One of the new features at Lunimale 2018 is a Light Walk, which brings together 35 artistic works from all categories to form an inner-city gallery, linking landmarks and monuments with undiscovered and off-the-beaten-path locations. Visitors can explore the Light Walk in numerous guided tours. In the ATELIERFRANKFURT, an area of around 1000 square metres will be occupied by nine installations, performances, light sculptures and video works. The façade of the Kornmarkt-Arkaden building project will be transformed into a giant interactive popcorn machine that spectators can set in motion and cause to overflow by clapping their hands. On Goetheplatz, "Glowblow" creates a dynamic light bubble, and with the installation "Schattenwerfer" ("Shadow Throwers"), artists on the banks of the Main take the opposite direction - they remove the light in the plane tree avenue on the northern bank of the Main near the Holbeinsteg, creating ever new lighting moods. In the neighbouring Nice, adults and children are invited to play with light balls.
The Luminale programme in Frankfurt and Offenbach leaves room for innovation, experimentation and improvisation. Museums, studios, trendy meeting places, district initiatives, religious communities and associations organise exhibitions, events and art projects. "This deep rooting of the Luminale in the urban society is truly unique," says Luminale director Isa Rekkab.
