The Mainfest 2019 will again take place with fireworks

The Mainfest 2019 will again take place with fireworks

The time has come: from 02 to 05 August, the Mainfest will once again be one of Frankfurt's most traditional festivals. The origins actually go back to 1340, when the consecration of the Dreikönigskirche took place. This then gave rise to the fishing festival of the Main fishermen, who celebrated "their river and its bounty". In addition there was "ox on the spit", wine from the fountain of justice, goose plucking, duck catching by the fishermen, firecracker shooting, fireworks, and colorful parade rides in fours and sixes along the banks of the Main.

These old Main festivals were continued in the wake of the inauguration of the new "Old Bridge" with an annual folk festival. Even after the destruction of the 2nd World War, the mayor of the time, Dr. Walter Kolb, continued the tradition. After a short forced move of the Mainfest to the Ostpark, it went back to the place in 1973, where it is still celebrated every summer for four days.

It is important to those responsible that some of the old traditions remain. So there will be again in 2019 "Ochs am Spieß" and also the Fischerstechen we again attract thousands of visitors to the Main. Due to the summer weather, a total of around 300,000 visitors are expected. For many of these visitors, the traditional closing fireworks on Monday evening are a decisive reason to visit the traditional Kerb. In 2018, the fireworks had to be cancelled due to the extreme drought. Painful for the showmen, who could generate up to 50% less turnover on this day. But safety simply comes first.

As this summer is also very dry again, it was unclear until the very end whether the fireworks can take place this time, or whether it must be cancelled again. At the implementation and preparation was changed quite a bit to meet the safety regulations during drought. Through changes in the selection of effects, the renunciation of rockets that ignite at high altitudes, the change of the burning angle as well as other additional measures, the risk of causing a fire has decreased considerably and is now in the acceptable range. This very small residual risk is countered by the use of fire monitors equipped with extinguishing agents. And so then, just before the Mainfest kicked off, there was the good news: there will be fireworks again in 2019!

The Mainfest fireworks will be set off as scheduled on Monday, August 5, at 10 p.m. from the Sachsenhausen Mainufer between Eiserner Steg and Untermainbrücke. The spectator area is exclusively the Mainufer on the city side. The Mainufer on the Sachsenhäuser side is then closed to the public.

But of course a visit to the festival is worthwhile not only on Monday evening. Throughout the weekend there are plenty of attractions, live music and a wonderful atmosphere on the banks of the Main, which can be enjoyed especially well in one of the summer gardens of the Mainfest.
