The museum can come: magistrate decides MOMEM support

Already in 2018 we had reported to you that the Museum of Modern Electronic Music, or MOMEM for short, was scheduled to open at Hauptwache later this year. A prestigious project for the city, which already caused an international stir when it was announced. After all, it will be the first museum of its kind in the world. But then it became strangely quiet about the project. The reason was soon identified: there were problems with the financing. And indeed, for some time it looked as if the museum was in serious jeopardy, despite all the many positive aspects it will bring for the initiators, the visitors and ultimately for the city.

But now there is actually good news: The MOMEM will get a loan needed for financing by the city of Frankfurt. This was decided by the city's magistrate on Friday, December 6. The city councillors are to decide on the proposal next week. This will bring the museum, which is to be built in the rooms of the former Children's Museum, a good step forward. Lord Mayor and MOMEM patron Peter Feldmann was pleased that the museum will be granted the loan: "Frankfurt stands for electronic music like no other city. It is right that we now give MOMEM the right push so that it can finally get started," said Feldmann.

Culture department head Ina Hartwig also sees the museum as a real asset for Frankfurt and is therefore happy that the political disputes seem to have been settled: "MOMEM follows an innovative museum concept that has international appeal. I am sure that the museum will become a flagship for Frankfurt."

Also relieved and happy should be Alex Azary, chairman of the Friends of MOMEM association. After months of uncertainty, the next stage can finally be ignited for his heart's project: "We are delighted that the city of Frankfurt has found a way to make MOMEM possible. We are now going full steam ahead with the planning and renovation work with the aim of opening in spring 2020," says Azary hopefully.

The compromise that has now been found for the start-up financing provides a total of 500,000 euros, which will be made available as a loan. This is to enable MOMEM to invest in the museum architecture. The Magistrate had already stipulated in a letter of intent in November 2015 that the premises on the mezzanine level of the Hauptwache, which had since been used by the then Children's Museum, should be transferred to the Friends of MOMEM association, and the City Council agreed to this by resolution in 2018. The magistrate has publicly committed to the establishment of MOMEM several times and underlined the importance this has for the city of Frankfurt am Main, also in international comparison.

We are already looking forward to MOMEM and wish the team all the best for the coming months! And of course we will keep you informed about the development!
