The winners of the Frankfurt Book Fair Film Awards

Awards in three categories as well as a "Special Recognition" for HILDA

The Frankfurt Book Fair Film Awards have been presented since 2004. In 2018, however, the award celebrated a premiere: for the first time, the winners were honoured directly on the exhibition grounds. The ceremony took place early on Thursday evening in Hall 4.1 on THE ARTS+ Runway. Awards were presented in the categories "Best Illustrated Book on Film", "Best International Litarary Adaptation for Children or Young Adults" and "Best International Literary Adaptation".

The winners in each category at a glance:

Best International Literary Adaptation

"INTRIGO - DEATH OF AN AUTHOR", based on the novels by Håkan Nesser, directed by Daniel Alfredson and starring Benno Fürmann (s. Photo)

Best International Literary Adaptation for Children or Young Adults

"Romy's Salon" (NL), director: Mischa Kamp

Best Illustrated Book on Film

"Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies" (Quirk Books)

There were also two runners-up in the "Best Illustrated Book on Film" category, which this year was awarded jointly with MGIP Motovun Group of International Publishers: "Marilyn Monroe 50 Sessions" (Knesebeck Verlag) and "Frankenstein - The First Two Hundred Years" (Reel Art Press).

In addition, there was a "Special Recognition" for the animated series "Hilda" that had just started on Netfilx, which was not comparable to the other films in the children and youth section due to its genre, but which impressed the jury very much in every respect and therefore deserved a special award.

Jury President Ellen Harrington, Director of the German Film Institute and Film Museum said of the selection of winners, "This year's competition was extremely exciting and diverse - with a wide range of countries, film genres and very different subject matter. The filmmakers impressed the jury above all with their exceptionally affectionate treatment of the originals. In the "Best Adaptation for Children and Young Adults" category in particular, we were delighted to see that the most compelling characters all happened to be girls or young women. And many of the directors and writers on whose work these films are based are also women. We also decided to give an additional prize to the animated short-form series Hilda and the Feature Film Prize to Romy's Salon, an exceptionally well-told and modern coming of age story."
